A word on anything on my mind

Joomla

I have been playing with Joomla for the last couple of days. It seems that finally I am getting the hangs of it.

If you have any cool modules or plugins that you are aware of, please post it to this post. I will go through all the modules and plugins (and themes) I have used and blog about them.

At this stage I am trying to install a mobile plugin … will get there!

Downloading YouTube videos

Someone asked me to download youtube videos for her. At the end of the day it is a pretty much strait forward thing to do, but, if you have not done it before, it could be tricky!

So, here is my process. Would love to know if there are easier ways … without buying software.

  • Make sure you have the url of the youtube video. It should be something like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qOwHP0G73E8
  • Point your browser to http://downloadyoutubevideo.org/
  • Past the link to the youtube video in the space provided, click on Download
  • Follow the instructions. Your link should download as a .flv file. FLV stands for Flash Video File. (see filext)
  • After the download it is best to rename the file name, not the extention. Change from video.flv to something more specific, i.e. “Grannys 80th.flv”
  • Your video can now be played on your PC using software that can play flv files. I use VLC media player from VideoLAN.
  • If you want to convert your video to some other format, you can use a video converter to do it. I use All Video Converter Pro from Zealotsoft.

Voila … your favourite YouTube on your desktop.

Gmail contacts

Finally sorted out my Gmail contacts. Delete EVERYTHING, and then exported all my contacts on Notes (830 of them) to vCard, and imported again on Gmail.

For the first time they are now “synced”. There should be something available to do it automatically, but hey, it works.

Windows 7 … again

Back on Windows 7 again. When I bought my laptop it was on Vista … fix(ta) it in two days to be on XP, then went to 7, just to realise that I spend way too much time in a XP VM at clients, so I downgraded again to XP.

Well, the client gave me a (loan) laptop, and now I can work on the laptop when accessing their servers … so … back to 7 again. :) 64-bit, so access to all 4GB of memory.

Have to install last bit of software, then I would be up and running 133% again (3GB RAM -> 4GB RAM)

This is something worth mentioning …

  • Forrester calculated a three-year risk-adjusted ROI of 147% for the composite organization with a payback period within 12 months of deployment.
  • Forrester also describes how businesses improved IT and end user productivity as well as reduced capital and operational costs within the messaging and collaboration environment.

Holiday season

It is that time of the year again. Time for annual break-away.

Not that I did not had any this year! There were Poland (work), Rio de Janeiro (conference & holiday with Anneke) and some breakaways inbetween, like the one to Cradock (and then EVERYONE came, it was awesome!!).

Well, tomorrow morning at 10 we are off to Montague, staying at Protea Farm for our annual break-away with Anneke’s family. Will most probably add photo’s on facebook. Here is a link to last year’s photo’s … Protea Farm 2008/2009.

And in 2010 I am realy going to try to blog more often. This means that the site might contain IT related entries again … after all, that is who I am, part of me.

Might blog from Protea Farm … mmm
